In this day and age when social media is the most popular form of communication, Latinos are the biggest minority to use social media with over 80% of Latinos using social media in some form. For many, using media pages like Facebook and Twitter, is a way to connect and stay in communication with the family and friends they left back home. They share stories, and photos, to keep each other informed and to remind them that they are thought of. As Latinos, we love to talk, we love to have those relationships where we can share and gossip with each other. We are natural communicators!
Social media has also become one of the ways Latinos receive daily news about what is happening in their home countries and their local communities through the news pages they choose to follow. We want to stay informed and connected. In other words we want to stay as much in touch with our culture and surroundings that we identify with. We are taking the internet by storm! Our massive use of social media has sparked some motivation and has caused the Hispanic Public Relations Association to create a day that recognizes and celebrates the power the Latino population has in social media which is June 25. That day is now nationally recognized as Latino Social Media day! Use the hashtag #LatinoSMday to participate in the action!
