At the Portland Art Museum, every Sunday children under 17 years old have free admission. Another great free event at the Portland Art Museum is the exhibit Samurai! Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection, which your children can enjoy from now until January 12, 2014.  The exhibit presents battle gear of high-ranking warriors of the 14th through 19th centuries. The exhibit also illustrates the development of the appearance and function of samurai equipment throughout the centuries.

Going to the Portland Art Museum is a great way to involve your children with art.  According to Lisa Phillips, when children study art, they learn important skills that will help them in the long run. The first is creativity, being able to approach tasks from a different angle.

Art can help your children build confidence and help them grow out of their comfort zone. Children having to problem solve through art projects will help them grow and understand why they have to solve the problem and how to solve it.  Those who play an instrument or even a sport understand and know that practice is what makes the player better. So if a child learns how to be persistent in their practice, it will make them a better and more adaptive person.

A child will learn from art how to focus and stay concentrated on topics. They will learn how to receive constructive feedback and understand how they can learn and grow from their feedback. They learn not to be offended or take feedback personally, but as a tool for learning. They develop the ability to collaborate with others, and brainstorm ideas and complete projects. Finally the last two skills they learn from art are dedication and accountability.

Taking your kids on educational outings is great way to keep active during these winter months and to have fun with your family.  Find a list of things to do this weekend with your family and kids at the following link: http://www.pdxkidscalendar.com/events-calendar/
