Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work and vision is boundless and incredibly inspiring to the Latino community. Dr. King (January 15, 1928 – April 4, 1968) is foundational in cultural awareness training and an inspiration to Victoria Lara, founder of Lara Media. In fact, Lara Media utilizes his teachings in various community outreach projects. Dr. King’s emphasis on social justice and equality is a pillar for any culturally responsive business.
Dr. King fought for equality for all. His sacrifices put both himself and his family in danger. Dr. King was arrested numerous times, his home was bombed, and he was a target for insults and abuse throughout his life until his assassination. The Latino community relates to these struggles and uses his perseverance as inspiration and motivation.
The Latino Community and Dr. King: Similar Goals, Visions and Obstacles.
It wasn’t until 1956 that the Supreme Court ruled that African Americans could sit where they liked on buses. Segregation legally came to a close, which was a massive achievement—but of course, “quiet” segregation and racism persists. The black community, often led by Dr. King, went on to achieve a series of additional milestones in the mid-century. His famous “I have a dream” speech is perhaps the most well-known in American history and was heard by over 250,000 people gathered in Washington D.C.
Dr. King authored five books and received many awards including the Nobel Prize when he was just 35 years old. Time Magazine named him “Man of the Year” in 1963. However, his greatest achievement was being recognized as a leader in his community. The Latino community also reveres such leadership and determination, prioritizing equal rights for all.
April 4, 1968, is a tragic date for all Americans. Dr. King had a deep desire to achieve social justice and as a result, he was targetted and assassinated on his hotel balcony. However, his legacy lives on and he remains a key figure in civil rights.
From Dr. King to Rosa Parks and Cesar Chavez, the world was (and is) rich with great leaders. Due to their efforts and sacrifices, we have made advances but realize we still have ways to go. These figures are the inspiration to Lara Media, established by members of the Latino community and advocates for equal rights. Latinos faces a myriad of obstacles. However, with a passionate team committed to social justice, Lara Media strives to achieve the kind of results Dr. King secured.
Whatever social justice cause you support, we encourage you to keep moving forward. Taking action doesn’t demand a huge undertaking—little steps add up to big change.
