Texan born actress Eva Longoria has decided to alter the roles in which she typically portrays. Many may recognize Longoria from her major role as Gabrielle Solis in the ABC sitcom Desperate Housewives. In this role, she played a sexy married woman who has an affair with her gardener, due to her busy husband not paying her any attention. This role was sassy and fun, but was merely entertaining, rather than providing any kind of political insight such as her new project.
In her new role in the movie “Frontera” which will release on September 5th, Longoria makes a complete 360 change in her acting career. In the film, Longoria portrays the pregnant wife of a Mexican immigrant who crosses to the United States in hopes for a better future for his family. This role is focused around concerns Longoria is passionate about: immigration, civic issues and social justice.
Few know that last year in 2013 Longoria graduated from Cal State University Northridge with her Masters in Chicano Latino Studies. Since, she has demonstrated a significant interest in advocating for issues affecting the Latino population. Longoria has created her own non-profit organization by her name, which helps Latinas build better futures for themselves and their families through education and entrepreneurship. Longoria was most recently a speaker at the National Council of la Raza conference this past July, further demonstrating her passions. We applaud her for doing more to represent the Latino immigrant population, and taking on roles that inform the public about real issues the immigrant population has to deal with. With Longoria taking initiative to play more impacting roles, we look forward to seeing her on the big screen in “Frontera” is coming out September 5th in select theaters.
